Jonathan Green is a famous author of English books and investigative journalism on narrative non-fiction. He has a great reputation for writing some very remarkable stories based on factual happenings about human life experience, taking deep looks into humanity with all its issues and problems, and covering tragic accounts of survival along with the bad aspects of man. He is the author of two of the best, highly acclaimed books: Murder in the High Himalaya (2010) and Sex Money Murder (2018), which show the depth of research, gripping prose, and nuanced storytelling to be greatly valued.

Early Life and Education

Jonathan Green was brought up and born in a piggery that existed in a small village, Glemsford, located near Sudbury, Suffolk. His childhood revolved around the peaceful, serene beauty of rural England. However, when Jonathan was 14 years old, his family decided to sell that farm and migrated to Bury St Edmunds. It brought a very radical change in life and plans from Jonathan Green’s side.

He boarded at St. Joseph’s College in Ipswich. The school was fairly standard, though, and the experience there seemed just not up to his expectations. Feeling hemmed in by the education system, he decided to complete his studies to become a journalist. In the future, these determinations set him on a course of fearless storytelling and investigative rigor.

He opposed regular schooling but returned to school to advance his education. Green graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College in 2015. This advanced degree helped him master the form of storytelling as well as gave him more resolve to do investigative reporting work.

The Making of a Professional Journalist

Green’s journalism career began when he was 18 years old, reporting for Suffolk Free Press, a local journalism entity that brought him to journalism with experience in investigative work. Most of what he learned about expectations in finding the truth, narrating compelling stories, and appealing to people’s attention came from his works on local media.

After gaining experience as a local journalist, Green went on to freelance to broaden his horizons. This period allowed him to write for various publications and tackle diverse subjects. He later attended the London College of Printing, an institution renowned for shaping many successful journalists.

He took the biggest break in The Big Issue, a London-based publication, as an investigative feature writer. He could really dive into long-form journalism and tell stories that make a difference, look deep into issues affecting society, and go into those little corners of the world.

A Global Storyteller

Jonathan Green has had a career taking him to some of the most challenging and intriguing corners of the world. From Sudan to South Africa, from Kazakhstan to Colombia, and from the ice fields of Alaska to the mountains of Tibet, Green has reported on stories that light up the human condition. His work has appeared in a who’s who of publications, including The New York Times, Virginia Quarterly Review, Garden and Gun, Town and Country, Sunday Times Magazine, Men’s Journal, Fast Company, Esquire, GQ, The Financial Times, Men’s Health, and The Mail on Sunday. His ability to adapt to various cultures and environments and not being reluctant to pursue every truth has earned him the stature of being one of the greatest narrative journalists of his generation.

Books by Jonathan Green

Jonathan Green has written two most popular books.

1. Murder in the High Himalayas (2010)

Author Debut Book Green joins us today to discuss her new book, Murder in the High Himalaya: Loyalty, Tragedy, and Escape from Tibet. The book describes one of the tragic cases of shootings where Tibetan refugees trying to flee Tibet to Nepal were attacked by the Chinese border patrol. For this, the author draws material from her article “Murder at 19,000 Feet,” which was published originally in Men’s Journal.

Green’s story extended beyond the facts of the tragic event into more extensive research involving the experiences of the refugees and the moral concerns of the mountaineers who saw this and the wider international politics around Tibet. Reviews include:

2. Sex Money Murder:

A Story of Crack, Blood, and Betrayal is Green’s second book, offering an up-close view of the infamous Bronx gang known as Sex Money Murder. In this book, Green writes about the birth and death of the gang in an exclusive, first-person perspective through interviews with its members, as well as federal agents, police officers, and prosecutors working to take down the gang. Author Jill Leovy described it in her book review for The New York Times Book Review as “exceptionally authentic.” The book stands out by its very solid research, lively depiction of gang life, and exploration of social conditions that bred such violence. As of March 2019, the book was in series development with producer Nicole Rocklin and rapper-producer 50 Cent.
